We received a number of outstanding articles from eminent experts addressing a gamut of issues concerning the COVID pandemic. It has necessitated bringing out a supplement of Apollo Medicine for including all of them.

The reviews in the supplement further consider systemic involvement in COVID disease, particularly in the management of conditions that do not require urgent treatment. Thus, stroke, hyperglycemia in diabetes, various endocrine disorders, and obesity must be attended to. Ear, nose, throat surgical procedures and esthetic clinics require strict precautions. The difficulties faced by persons with a disability also need careful consideration.

Whereas COVID infection is primarily a pulmonary affliction, it is not unusual to encounter various other complications involving multiple systems of the body. Patients having mild-to-moderate disease seem to make a complete recovery. However, it is increasingly being reported that chronic organ dysfunction may persist. Hence, long-term effects on the health of these infected patients require close observation.

A novel therapeutic approach consisting of vascular rearrangement and controlled angiogenesis in patients with preexisting ischemic and high shear vascular conditions is being pursued.

Psycho-emotional problems may also present considerable distress, especially among the elderly, women, and children. These must be recognized and appropriately managed. The role of physicians and the community is important in proper care of such patients. Prolonged lockdowns lead to decreased physical activity. It has been suggested that moderate-intensity aerobic exercise may have a protective effect against respiratory infections in elderly patients.

A case of life-threatening pneumonia due to the COVID infection is reported.

This pandemic has highlighted the importance of integrating modern engineering technologies with the existing health-care facilities (such as artificial intelligence, Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, robots, and drones) to effectively deal with such massive outbreak of the disease and its complications.

Besides medical issues, the pandemic has caused serious socioeconomic difficulties. Preoccupation with the COVID pandemic has resulted neglect of the existing diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, vaccine-preventable diseases, and other chronic conditions. Malnutrition, already rampant in children; anemia and other nutrient deficiencies; and various problems of women are very likely to increase. The government and the medical profession must take cognizance of these issues and plan and proactively tackle them.

We again express our gratitude to the experts for their contributions.
